South Coast
Travelers to Jamaica are usually familiar with Negril, the country’s main tourist attraction. The simple beauty of the South Coast has begun to get its fair share of tourists recently. Here, life is what it was years ago, there is no trace of commercialism, and the people are used to simple, uncomplicated living.

Gold was the primary commodity searched by settlers here in the early years and now, tourists are hankering for the jewel of clear waters in secluded beaches. They search for clean, smooth sands and the glorious sun. Here in the South, the old ways still rule. The fishermen’s bountiful catch are sold through the local markets with prices that are practically the same years ago.

The usual route taken by tourists is from Negril, going through Savanna-la-Mar leading up to Manderville. From there, they take a boat tour up to the Black River, where the freshwater crocodiles are in abundance.

If you are a tourist and you have more time to spare, make sure to visit Treasure Beach prior to your Manderville trip.

What kind of tourist would best appreciate the beauty of the South Coast? These shores are for those who want to experience a different kind of getaway; one does not involve swanky hotel rooms and commercial entertainment. The South Coast is a quiet, serene area with no duty-free shops, noisy musicians, and wild parties. Here, everything is natural. Electric fans and mosquito nets will replace your standard air conditioning.

The beauty of the South’s beach can rival those located in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. No fancy restaurants here, just old style eateries, the type you would find in Jamaica during the 1950s. The prices are like what they charge during those years too – good food for incredibly less cash. The lifestyle here remains the same too – it is what they have during those olden days.

Of course, with the rising demand for tourism, it can be expected that this charming, sleepy town will soon fall under vast commercialization. For now, visitors can still enjoy the serenity that is the character of the South Coast.
