Port Antonio Transports Print E-mail

For foreign travelers who are planning on going to Port Antonio, taking the plane is the most practical way to get there. If you prefer flying into an international airport, which seems to be the only way to do it is to book your tickets for arrival at Montego Bay’s Donald Sangster Airport. There is a daily one-way flight into Port Antonio costs $75; or Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport although there are no more flights to Port Antonio, therefore your only way would be through Montego Bay.

However, some hotels or resorts (especially the large ones) usually arrange for airport transfers from that point. So book with hotels or resorts ahead of time and request for that service, if you like. It will be very convenient for you. But then again you can always take the direct flight to Port Antonio's small airport, Ken Jones Aerodrome (Check with the airlines about this). This local airport of Port Antonio is 6 miles (10 kilometers) west of the center of Port Antonio. Most of the taxis meet arriving planes, so from there you can acquire the services of these taxis to take you to your hotel or resors.

If you, for some reason, do not feel like riding the taxi, then take the bus! From Montego Bay, bus fares would cost $25 for a one-way ride. There are private-operated bus lines (i.e. Tour Wise) whose bus will drop you off at your hotel. The trip from Montego Bay takes roughly 2 hours. If you could shell out a bit more money, and if you long for a convenient/ independent feel of traveling, you can rent a car in Montego Bay.The 134-mile (216km) drive to Port Antonio will take at least four hours because the road is, if not traffic-congested, not in good condition. In addition, you will have to contend with bikers, goats, and rude Jamaican drivers, among others.Try it while not minding the aforesaid glitches, if you want to see the real Jamaica for a bit.You have the freewill to make use of every possible mode in meandering about Port Antonio. You can hike or hitch to wherever you wish to go off.

Nevertheless, in getting around Port Antonio, it is highly recommended that you use a private car (or a rental car), or a taxi if the former is not available. (Tip: you may ask the taxi driver to drop you off at a certain place, and arrange with him to pick you up at a certain time, at that same place.) Take this advice, for the sake of handiness and to spare you from experiencing a catastrophe on earth, take the bus transportation.
