Ocho Rios

 Ocho Rios is located northeast coast of Jamaica; it is in the resort area of Runaway Bay. It is once was a small banana and fishing port that turns into a leading tourist spot in the heart of Jamaica, and along with Port Antonio, Ocho Rios is capable of launching large scale tourism in that area.

 The name Ocho Rios is derived from the Spanish word, which literally means “eight rivers,” but it is believed to be just a mere corruption of the word Las Chorreras or waterfalls, as waterfalls are the most striking and attractive part of the town.

  Famous people once found this region their hideaway, Ian Fleming of James Bond flick fame, Noel Coward, Errol Flynn, and some British and American Literati who draws inspiration in this place.

  Ocho Rios is famous for its Fern Gully. It stretches from the coast for about four miles up to the central mountain area. It is a breath taking sight to see the plethora of tropical ferns, which consists of about 500 species of foliage only to be seen on tropical rainforest. Only faint dapples of sunshine penetrate through the thick foliage, thereby making the temperature about ten degrees cooler.

  A two-hour drive east of Montego Bay, Ocho Rios is now Jamaica’s cruise ship capital its bay is an ore terminal and dredged to the south and hotels by the beach fringed by palm and coconut trees and apartment blocks.

  Ocho Rios has a deep-water pier that is a docking space enough for three cruise ships which in turns attracts an exodus of tourists to the place that you will hardly find a day that the streets of Ocho Rios not being jammed by tourists.
