Montego Bay

On Jamaica’s northwest coast, Montego Bay is the essence of the complete resort where flowering trees, velvety meadows and palm-covered hills edge a turquoise sea and bleached white beaches.

Called "el golfo de buen tiempo" (the gulf of good weather) by Christopher Columbus, it was dubbed Bahia de Manteca (Lard Bay) by the Spanish, and later became a major shipping port for sugar and bananas.

At the turn of the century, travelers came from far and wide to sample the waters of Doctor’s Cave Beach, which were said to cure almost any ailment. Today, the beach is as popular as ever, while Montego Bay is a paradise city located at the Northern Coast of Jamaica. Those looking for a perfect Caribbean holiday will find an ideal vacation destination in this city. Also known as Mobay, the city features the most delightful sights and sounds that will titillate even the most well traveled tourists. Surrounded by low mountains, lush greeneries, endless white-sand beaches and turquoise seas, Mobay offers travelers a most relaxing and enjoyable stay.

The country’s largest airport, the Sir Donald Sangster International Airport is located in this city so most foreign tourists who arrive by air are welcomed to the country by this city. Montego Bay was called “The Gulf of Good Weather” by Christopher Columbus and was later called the Bahia de Manteca (Lard Bay) by the Spanish settlers because of the city’s pig fat and butter trade. The city plays a big role in the economy of Jamaica because not only is it the country’s second largest city, it was also once a major shipping port for Jamaican products like Banana and Sugar. Today, tourism is the city’s biggest source of income.

Hotels and accommodations in the city range from exclusive 5-star villas to little guesthouses and budget inns. Most of the restaurants and shopping spots in Montego Bay are located along the main boulevard Gloucester Ave.

The secluded Doctor’s Cave Beach is one of the city’s most famous beaches. Foreign tourists have been trooping to this island ever since the article by the chiropractor H. Baker about the resort’s water’s healing powers was published. There are also plenty of beautiful public beaches in the city but these beaches do not have the same facilities and amenities as the private beaches. Public beaches also afford foreigners very little privacy and security.

Aside from the fantastic beaches, visitors can enjoy the historic sights in the city. Many parts of Montego Bay have remained as they were, centuries ago. One popular attraction is the Rose Hall, a stately mansion that is said to be haunted by the ghost of Annie Palmer. As the story goes, Annie Palmer murdered her three husbands and later killed by her own lover. Another legendary home is the Greenwood Great House, a property along the countryside, built more than two centuries ago and features a collection of very rare musical instruments. It was built by a cousin of poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Those who prefer to engage in little adventures can try hand-feeding hummingbirds and other species at the Rocklands Bird Feeding Station in Anchovy, horse-back riding at the Good Hope plantation, attend the annual Reggae Sum Fest or go on an excursion at the limestone hills of Cockpit Country. Golfers can enjoy their stay in the city and will have plenty of golfing to do because Mobay has four world-class18-hole golf courses, including the Tryall Golf, Tennis and Beach Club.

For those who prefer water adventures, one can charter a boat and go on a fishing expedition. The Montego Bay Marine Park on the other hand features 10 square miles of amazing coral reefs.

Whether you are looking forward to a relaxing stay or a fun-filled and exciting vacation, Montego Bay can fill your every need.
