Following the improvement and completion of the Trans-insular highway, getting into places in Barbados has never been efficient, while driving on the left hand maintain your speed limit to 60 kph it’s the speed limit there, besides driving at that pace gives you opportunity not to miss great sites on the highway. At that speed, travel from Bridgetown to Speightstown eats your time to 30 minutes and to Holetown and Oistins for about 20 minutes.
On the Bus This type of transportation is the most comprehensive in the area, if you are the type of tourist who loves to mingle and fuse among the locals and loves to experience grass roots understanding the bus is perfect for you, though you may experience crowded influx of passengers during rush hour, then again its part of the thrill. The bus may cost you Bd$1.50 for the entire journey which terminates to Speightstown.
Mini Vans Another frequent mode of transportation on the road is these mini vans. Just like any other public transport you can flag it down along the way, these licensed vans can be identified by their licensed plate “ZR” etched on it, and there is no fixed schedule but you can see them on the road frequently.
Taxis Taxis on Barbados do not have meters but fares are regulated by the Government. Listings are available from the Tourist Office to avail.
Rent a car There is a wide range of transportation for hire in Barbados, choose anything from limousine to a “moke” to a bicycle or a scooter, so getting places is just a breeze in Barbados. Cars maybe rented by the hour, days, or even weeks. You can make inquiries by the hotels or airports on how to avail of this rental transports.
Documentation Before you can drive around town Barbados requires you to have a license, this can be obtained from car rental companies, the Ministry of Transport (Mon-Fri 0830-1430), the airport (every day 0800-2200) or police stations in Hastings, Worthing and Holetown. There is a registration fee of Bd$10. A valid national licence or an International Driving Permit should also be held.
