San Salvador

San Salvador Island is about 12 miles long and five miles wide. This island is particularly unique The Island is actually the exposed peak of a submerged mountain that reaches 15,000 feet down to the ocean floor. The island offers vacationers relaxation and scenic sights. You can swim in its quiet beaches, go scuba diving, do a little bit of snorkeling, and even go fishing.

Nevertheless, more than just being a relaxing destination, San Salvador Island also has a notable history. Christopher Columbus stumbled onto this island in 1492 during his historic voyage to the New World. Columbus even noted in his journal, “The beauty of these islands surpasses that of any other and as much as the day surpasses the night in splendour.” Later on, the island was taken over by British buccaneer, George Watling. Watling renamed it to Watling Island, after himself. It was only in 1925 that the island was christened by its original name once again.

San Salvador is filled with monuments, ruins, and shipwreck sites that you can visit to trace back its rich history. Guests are welcome to tour the old plantation ruins, explore the Lucayan Indian sites, and even climb up the old kerosene-operated lighthouse.

Combining its historical sites and beautiful waters, San Salvador Island truly offers a wonderful package for everyone to experience.
